![]() By this time, Frank is beginning to crack. When Frank goes to join her at Christmas, Kettle again is shadowing him, and continues to do so for the next six years. Secretly, Frank sees Mildred and convinces her she should go to San Francisco. Further, Kettle promises he will keep searching the entire seven years for the body. Because of the circumstances, Kettle is certain that Mildred has been murdered and states he will prove it by producing Mildred's body. After the police, comes Kettle, an insurance investigator. They execute the plan and Mildred leaves their Ventura home to hide in Los Angeles. The courts will declare her legally dead, and they will have more than enough money to last them the rest of their lives. The more they consider the idea, the more Frank is in favor of it-all that needs to be done is Mildred disappear for seven years. Frank says they both would be worth more dead. Further, they do not even own their own home. As the story opens, Frank has just gotten a job after being out of work, but he is upset, for in another few years he will be fifty-too young for an old age pension and too old to get another job. What has Carl done?įrank and Mildred Partridge are a married couple who have lived a mediocre life. ![]() When he returns to Elsa she sees another man, completely unlike the man that Carl has just killed, and proclaims he is the man who assaulted her. Carl takes Elsa driving where she eventually sees and remembers the man. Carl learns from Elsa that the man who assaulted her was wearing a grey suit and she would remember him if she saw him again. But Carl, knowing that this will upset the already hysterical woman, refuses to allow the doctor examine Elsa and also turns away the police. Ferguson, hearing the commotion, calls a doctor and the police. When Elsa is revived, she tells Carl that a man appeared in the doorway and she becomes hysterical saying that the man has killed her. Later, that night, when Carl returns home from work, he finds a cake in the oven burned to a crisp and the trailer is in shambles. Ferguson leaves, warning Elsa to be sure to keep the door locked. Ferguson invites Elsa to go to town with her for some shopping, but Elsa refuses, for she wants to be home in the trailer when Carl returns from work. Ferguson calls on Elsa, she suggests that it is not wise for the trailer to be parked away from the others, and underneath a dark tree, for there are hitchhikers and others who may be dangerous. Ferguson learns that Elsa was formerly a ballet dancer who had a nervous breakdown. Ferguson, if she will keep an eye on Elsa. As Carl leaves, he asks a nearby, friendly neighbor, Mrs. Carl is disturbed about this and warns Elsa not to go on the beach unless there are other people about. ![]() Carl works and therefore is away from the trailer all day, leaving Elsa alone. But after the job's completed, it's anyone's guess what will happen, leading to a twist at the end.Carl and Elsa are a young married couple who live in a trailer near a highway on the beach in California. As long as the truce is in effect, the engineer doesn't have to fear the associate killing him, and he'll continue to do his work. The two agree to a truce, albeit a temporary one, till the job is completed. Suspecting the new arrival from America and fearing for his life, the engineer tries to make a quick exit, but the financiers' associate walks in brandishing a gun. That night, the engineer hears a news report on the radio regarding the murder of a building project official in southern California, allegedly committed by a man who has fled to Mexico. With no options for at least 5-6 weeks, the engineer reluctantly agrees to continue the work. The man's plan? Have the financier drive off right away leaving the engineer, as well as the financier's associate, stuck at the mine. With the mine needing only five more weeks of drilling and his project engineer on the verge of quitting, the desperate financier has run out of options and asks his associate to help make the engineer stay. The other man is supposedly an associate of his. Unexpectedly, a car pulls up with two occupants. A failing mining operation in the Mexican hills has claimed its latest 'victim' the American project engineer is fed up with cave-ins and other recurring problems.
